The major of taxation was founded in 1986 at the former Shandong University of Finance. It was incorporated into the major of public finance in 1998 due to the adjustment of national policies, and its enrollment was resumed in 2005. It was granted the master's degree program of taxation in 2010, rated as A-class major in Shandong Province in 2014, a key discipline of SDUFE in 2015, and a first-class specialty of SDUFE in 2019.

There are 28 full-time faculty members in the department of taxation. Among them, there are 1 Qilu famous teacher, 1 national tax leading talent, 1 high-end think tank talent of Shandong Province, 1 distinguished professor of SDUFE, and 4 young excellent talents of SDUFE. The department has 8 full professors and 12 associate professors. There are 13 teachers with PhD degree, accounting for 46% of the total full-time faculty. Our scholars are mainly between 33 and 60 years old, with an average age of 46 years, and are graduated from Beijing University, Xiamen University, Shandong University, Shanghai University of Finance and economics, Central University of Finance and economics, Southwest University of Finance and economics, and other well-known 985, 211 universities. On the whole, the department has formed an academic echelon with a balanced combination of the old, middle-aged and young people with great development potential and innovative spirit.

In recent years, our faculty members have successively presided 9 national and ministry level projects such as national social science fund, National Natural Science Foundation of China, humanities and social science fund of the Ministry of education, and more than 20 provincial and ministerial level projects such as Shandong social science planning and Provincial Natural Science Foundation; have published more than 100 papers in core journals such as CSSCI; and and won outstanding achievements in social science of Shandong Province, excellent scientific research achievements of the Ministry of Finance and the whole country. There are 5 provincial and ministerial awards for outstanding tax academic research achievements, more than 10 department level awards for excellent scientific research achievements of colleges and universities in Shandong Province and excellent research achievements in tax academic research of Shandong Province, and more than 10 books have been published. The department actively serves the society; it has undertaken a number of provincial and ministerial commissioned projects and provincial training projects, and train nearly 1000 "new civil servants" for the local tax system of Shandong Province from 2016 to 2018. Many reports have received important instructions from the main leaders of Shandong provincial Party committee and government, and the policy suggestions have been incorporated into many provincial documents. Many teachers have won the honorary titles and awards, such as "excellent tutor of Shandong Province bachelor's degree thesis", "Challenge Cup" excellent instructor of national college students' extracurricular academic and technological works competition, "excellent teacher of Shandong University of Finance and economics", "excellent graduate tutor of Shandong University of Finance and economics", "model of teacher's ethics of SDEFE".

The department has formed a school running concept of "thick foundation, heavy application, excellent quality and strong characteristics" in practice and exploration. It aims to cultivate applied compound talents who practice socialist core values, have a sense of social responsibility, public awareness and innovative spirit, master modern economic theory and analysis methods, have theoretical knowledge and business skills in tax, finance and financial accounting, be familiar with tax policy and practical operation, master relevant statistical analysis methods, and have strong social practice ability. In recent years, the average annual employment rate of students is close to 94%. The department has exporting well-cultivated talents for national civil servants, agencies and other intermediary agencies, financial institutions and large and medium-sized enterprises. The average annual postgraduate entrance examination rate is 22%; many students have been admitted to Renmin university of China, Nankai University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Wuhan university, Chinese academy of fiscal sciences, Central university of finance and economics, Shanghai university of finance and economics, and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics.
